New Release: OUT OF THE BLUE

Just in time for Summer!  This new wordless book from illustrator Alison Jay will charm children and adults alike!  Jay's other Barefoot titles, LISTEN LISTEN and I TOOK THE MOON FOR A WALK, are some of my personal favorites.

This evocative wordless book about the mysteries of the sea invites readers to tell the story in their own words, which stimulates the imagination and helps develop visual literacy. Follow Alison Jay's distinctive crackle-varnished artwork as a storm -- and what it brings -- transforms the seashore for a day. Includes endnotes on marine life, lighthouses and the intriguing world of items that wash up on beaches.

I particularly like wordless books because they allow children to come up their own narrative and ideas.  Plus, it is fun looking for all the little details that Jay puts into each picture.  Another wonderful feature to this wordless book is its quiet message about inclusiveness and compassion.  When beachgoers find a beached octopus, they are at first repelled and frightened by it.  Then, they slowly realize how the creature needs their help and they work together to return it to the sea.

As a final bonus, the end pages contain information on things like tide pools for further exploration!  This is fast becoming one of my favorite Barefoot Books!
